The challenges of traditional school for neurodiverse students

For neurodivergent pupils, such as those with ASD, ADHD or dyspraxia, the traditional classroom environment can be difficult and overstimulating to navigate. Days at school can present a variety of cognitive, sensory and social issues which prevent these pupils from being able to fully engage in class activities.

Neurodivergent pupils process information differently to their neurotypical peers and, as such, can find that lesson plans are not inclusive of their learning styles. Within an overstretched education system, those with Special Educational Needs are often overlooked and not accommodated for which leaves them vulnerable to developing school-related anxiety and not reaching the educational achievements that they are capable of.

How private tuition can help

In-person or online tutoring can provide an educational experience away from the overwhelming noise and distractions of school settings. Neurodivergent pupils are able to build self-confidence when they are away from traditional school environments which are typically not inclusive of their needs. By building a relationship with their pupil, experienced tutors can establish an understanding of how to maximise their potential and build strategies which will stand them in good stead for when they attend further education.

Building a better learning environment

On a one-to-one basis, private tutors can tailor their lesson plans to meet the needs and learning styles of neurodiverse pupils whilst crucially allowing them to learn at their own pace, thus accommodating differences in processing speeds. Whilst pupils might find it difficult to retain information which has been presented to them within the chaos of a long school day, the best expert tutors can work with pupils to manufacture revision techniques which work for them and allow them to later apply their knowledge efficiently under exam conditions.
